What Are Your Idols?

I made the decision this morning to take a break from my normal facebook routine. Sometimes in our lives, we need to take a break from things, to sit back and be able to hear from God more clearly. In my time with the Lord today, He brought to my attention the story of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego in Daniel 3. In this story King Nebuchadnezzar makes an image of gold and demands that everyone in the Kingdom fall down and worship it. Shadrach, Meschach and Abednago choose not to. Even though they realize that there may be consequences (being thrown into the fiery furnace), they'd rather not worship the image of gold. They're more concerned about their relationship with God than whether they live or die. They know that God will deliver them out of the fiery furnace, so they have nothing to worry about.
In our daily lives we have choices to make every single day. We choose what schedule to go by, we choose what we will wear, what we'll eat, what activities we'll do that day, etc. We have a choice to either serve God or serve the things in our life. Some of my idols that I recognized were food, people, facebook and internet, cellphone and.....myself. About a week ago I dropped my cell phone down the toilet and it got ruined. I was without a cell phone for several days and I felt so lost without it. Whenever I fast from facebook I feel the urge to check it every second of the day. LOL My mind is constantly thinking about food and what my next meal will be. I'm always on the internet wasting my time with silly things. I look at others as though they are better than me and try to be like them at times. I'm always trying to find a way to make myself look better with diets, new clothes, wearing makeup, dying my hair blonde, etc. All of these have become idols in my life and I'm realizing that I need freedom from them.
What if we became obsessed with God like we are everything else? What if we spent the majority of our days soaking in God's presence and drawing closer to HIm? What if we couldn't live without getting into God's word? What if we spent more time on our heartlife, rather than our outward appearance? What if we tried to be more like God, rather than everyone else around us? What would happen if we were hungry and thirsty for God's word more than physical food and drink? What are you investing your time and energy into? Are you worshiping idols or God? If God told you to give these things up, would you? If it meant dying in a hot, fiery furnace, would you give it all up to draw closer to God and even lay down your life for His will?
I leave you with this verse to meditate on this week. Luke 9:23-25 23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it. 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self?
